Reading Apps

A lot of my most used apps are related to reading (I know, it’s not a super shocker…but still) And the best part is if you have a library card a lot of these apps will be available for you for FREE!

The Libby App

This app is available for free with your library card. It houses your local library’s digital content at the touch of a button. I love that books are automatically returned, in case you forget. There is also a widget available on iPhones that displays your current read and progress, which I use constantly.

Goodreads App

I have my gripes with goodreads, and I am trying to transition to StoryGraph for 2026, but for the time being I am going to include this app. It’s free, and it helps you track your TBR, current reading list, and reviews. It also has different communities you can join and find book recommendations and giveaways.

Book of the Month

I really enjoy book of the month. It’s a monthly subscription where you get a free hardcover book sent to your door. Each month you get to pick a book, and if none of them strike your fancy you get to keep your credit and carry it into the next month!

Hoopla App

Hoopla is another free app that you can access with your library card, and again you can get comics, magazines, books audiobooks and even tv shows and movies! All for free!

Health & Fitness

Some of these apps you do need to pay for, while also having free alternative versions. These are just some of the apps that I have been working with recently that I really enjoy.

Finch App

This little bird has helped me through some of the worst mental health days I’ve had the past year. There is a free version and a paid version. The paid version just gives you access to different rewards and clothes for your little bird. You set your goals, and as you check them off you earn points to go on a journey. The more points you earn the more outfits and furniture you can buy for your bird. It is precious…oh and you get to hatch mini pets for your pet bird!

The Underbelly

This is a subscription based app with Jessamyn Stanley. She does have a free daily affirmation that you can get just for downloading the app. But she has all types of yoga classes, lengths, and difficulties for people with big bellies. It is $20 a month or $180 for the year. I just really like her and how she shares her yoga practice for every body type.

Pikmin App

This is a free app (that has paid content), but it connects to your watch or phone and tracks your steps. With the pikmin you can hatch them with step goals, and you can plant flowers. You can also fight mushrooms and earn postcards that you can send to friends. It’s really cute and has encouraged Jason and I to get walking more.

Fantasy Hike

This is another walking app, but instead of growing pikmin, you are a halfling on a journey to Mount Fire (for copyright reasons the creator changed it, but it is playing homage to The Lord of the Rings series by J. R. R. Tolkien.) It does help motivate you to move at your own pace while also telling you a story.

Miscellaneous

These apps I couldn’t put in a category together, but they are some of my most used and loved apps.

Pinterest

I love pinterest for creative ideas for writing prompts, crafts and activities that I use at work in storytime. I also like to try different recipes and save memes. Pinterest is just so much fun to scroll for inspiration or to share your own projects.

Obsidian App

Obsidian is perfect if you are a writer, or a student, or just anyone working on a project. You can connect thoughts and research in a non-linear way. It’s helpful to keep character information straight, plot points that I add to a story, I can really flesh them out and add my research there so I can reference it at any point during the writing process.

CandlesUp App

If you are like me and struggle to remember to buy gifts or cards for people for their birthday this app will help you. It counts down the days to your next “birthday” person. You can add everyone’s birthday and never miss postage for a card again! This is another app that has a widget, which is really nice.

These are my favorite apps at the moment, let me know what your favorites are in the comments below!
