Wednesday Wins
Hello everyone!
I promised a mid-week check in, but I didn’t make my 8am goal—so I apologize to my subscribers because you will not get to see this early like I always intend. However, I am giving myself grace in this new era of my life.
Monday I started my new job. I am a Youth Services Librarian at a public library. This job is in a completely different library system than I was in before and there are so many positives that I just have to share.
I no longer have to punch in!!! If you know me IRL then you know why this is so important to me. I am and will always be chronically late. I wake up 1.5-2 hours before I have to be at work, but I get distracted talking to my Husband or playing with the cats. I am not ever egregiously late, just within the 5 minute window. Honestly, I don’t ever think thats terrible. I mean in my opinion we are all human, and we’re just going to be late sometimes. I’m so thankful for this because having to punch in at a certain time and stay on top of that everyday in and out for lunch was very stressful. That weight was lifted instantly.
The benefits are amazing! Staff are given PTO banks of vacation, sick, personal, and comp. Each category covering everything you could ever think of. The insurance is paid 90% employer, 10% employee—which is HUGE for me. Jason has to be on my insurance since he is self employed, and “family” insurance plans are EXPENSIVE.
I am on a children & teen only floor. I have nothing against adults, they should be using the library to its fullest. I just prefer kids and teens, so I’m really in my element!
I get to be creative again! We are allowed to decorate for the holidays, and I mean put things on the desk, the columns, in the meeting room we use for storytime programs. I haven’t been able to do that since I worked at BCPL.
I got to make a macaroni monster today!
The collection doesn’t float! Which means that when someone checks out a book at my library, but they return it to a different branch in the system, instead of staying at that branch if it were floating, it gets routed back to my library. This is perfect for cutting down on long holds lists, and for those that like to read series a copy of each book in the series will be available at every library branch. Which is really nice when helping with reader’s advisory.
This library system takes staff safety seriously, and that’s all I’m going to say.
There’s just so much trust. I feel like I am finally being respected as a professional, while also being allowed to explore creatively. I know it’s only been 3 days, but it has been a very good 3 days.
I got to hang out with my best friend, Ally last night. We’ve been watching True Blood—she has loved it for a while and I’ve never seen it. Tomorrow night I want to take the night off and just work on something creatively, probably drawing something in procreate. I will also be spending the weekend out with friends, I’m going to Crochet Club and then I’ll probably work on content for next week and catch up with old coworkers. I am so looking forward to the rest of this week. I hope your week has been kind to you, and if it hasn’t, that you take time to take care of yourself.
Thanks for checking in with me, friends. Here’s to small joys, creative sparks, and showing up—five minutes late or not. 😉
